31 Context-Free Observations from Jessica Hadwin at the Genesis Invitational

TOUR pro Adam Hadwin’s better half sent us a dispatch from Torrey Pines.

Another week, another last minute flight change, but we were lucky enough to be out again for some golf, views, and family time for the Genesis at Torrey Pines. We landed Thursday to dark clouds and gloomy weather, a premonition of sorts for what Adam was up against on the course. Never ones to let the weather or golf dictate our lives though, we made the best of our time in one of the most beautiful places on earth with a few hiccups along the way.

Thursday

-We were supposed to leave Wednesday but a snow storm came through and pushed us back a day

-Driving to the airport at 6am our daughter (5) said three different times “I’m excited to see daddy!” Gives me instant mom guilt that she’s not on the road more often, but we also want her to have some normalcy and a little structure as she gets ready to go to kindergarten full time

-There’s an extremely loud buzzing sound on this flight to San Diego. I’m going to panic about it for next hour till we land

-San Diego/Torrey/Genesis highlights for me are Philz Coffee, Cava, the seals in La Jolla, the overall ambiance and vibe of the area

- Lowlights for me: I got nothing really. Maybe traffic? Being a Kansan makes it easier to appreciate the beauty of this place and put it on a pedestal

-I know nothing about the technicality of Torrey as a golf course, but as a repeat spectator, I have yet to find a more beautiful overall course. The paragliders, the striking cliff-sides, the ocean sunsets, the temperature, easy walk.

-For what it’s worth, Adam does not agree with the above but only cuz he says he’s not good at Torrey

-Thanks to the awesome tournament transportation we got a ride from the airport straight to the course

-Got to Torrey right as Adam was on 18 (his ninth) so we went to say hi and maybe turn the mojo around then I took our daughter to “Tour School.” *Best benefit ever*

-It started raining more heavily, so I decided to sit inside. TBD if I’ll see any more shots than the 2 on 18 today

-Checked the app, sad to say we didn’t change the mojo. Bogey et al.

-Yapped on twitter instead of going back out. Was reminded that some don’t find my jokes funny.

-Went back to the hotel motel Residence Inn, ordered Door Dash, and called it a night

-Adam had a couple valentine surprises for our daughter and seeing her smile and joy turned the night right around

-I thought our night was over but our daughter started having a super hard time sleeping so I moved to the pullout couch bed with her for the night. I now know what the olympians felt like on their cardboard mattresses in Paris

-Adam offered to sleep on it, but I felt he’d been punished enough by Torrey

Friday

-Took Adam to the course at about 745 AM. Happy Valentine’s Day! The mood this morning isn’t quite happy yet.

-Talked about if we should go to Phoenix for a couple days or just stay out since we already have a room for the weekend

-I’m trying to stay golf positive and mention the within-10 cut clause. Adam says he’ll need to shoot 62 to have a chance. I feel that’s aggressive?

-Went back to the hotel with our daughter to pack up the room because we have to move rooms in the same hotel

-Speaking of hotels, all of the staff at the hotel are so nice, which feels like a rarity sometimes

-Get to the course about 1030, drop our daughter at Tour school, realized I forgot my headphones, contemplated if I should just go sit in the car since I don’t have them but press on to find Adam.

-Found him on 4. My socks are wet. Contemplate going in again. I press on again

-I realize we are matching in all black because nothing says happy day of love like looking like you’re going to a funeral

-Since I forgot my headphones, I passed the time making digital valentine cards/memes for Adam to cheer him up (I also got him a real card)

-I hate doing it, but I couldn’t find a concession nearby so I asked Adam on the 11 tee if he had any extra snacks. They were waiting on a group on the green, or I wouldn’t have bothered him

-Feels like despite finishing DFL yesterday he might be able to get himself in the cut line!

-But then he doubles 12 but then he birdies 13 but then he bogeys 14

-It sucks to see your person visibly struggling and bummed, but I just try to make him laugh, remind him that we don’t care what his score is, and that life in general is so much bigger than a round of golf or tournament.

-Decide to make the most of the trip out so we will hang around for the weekend. V Day Dinner tonight, Dinner with Tour friends tomorrow, then start the trek home

-Amazing how different the weeks can be out here but that’s life in general right and a very privileged one at that.
