Remembering The Most Famous Drive in Skins Game History

The Skins Game is back for 2025, and with it a flood of memories of Skins Games gone by, filled with moments featuring Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and the king of the silly season, Fred Couples.

But even with all of these names, there are two others who created one of the most memorable moments in Skins Game history: Annika Sorenstam and Fred Funk.

Let's set the scene

In 2005, Fred Funk had a career season capped by a win at the PLAYERS Championship. As far as his overall game is concerned, at this point in time, Fred is most well known for being one of the straightest, a bit also one of the shortest hitters on the PGA Tour. (We'll let the stats from the PGA TOUR Website below speak for themselves)

To put that 270 yards into perspective, that would out him more than 8 yards below the lowest ranked player in the PGA Tour in 2025 Brian Campbell - who we should note won twice this year on tour, proving that golf is such a silly game. On the other hand, his driving accuracy percentage would still have him first!

As for the other character in this story, Annika Sorenstam, 2005 was another absolute banger season filled with career accomplishments, including her 8th Rolex Player of the Year award, 8th LPGA Tour money title, winning 10 of the 20 events she entered, including 2 majors, and the scoring title. This helped to earn her a spot in the 2005 Skins Game alongside Fred Funk, Fred Couples, and, of course, Tiger Woods.

Then Came The Drive

The running gag of the day, which included a bit of a side bet, was whether Annika would be able to outdrive Fred Funk at some point during the event, and it only took them until the 3rd hole for that potential situation to become reality.

As part of the bet, Fred donned a skirt to finish out the hole, which also led to Tiger Woods unleashing one of the most memorable Tiger zingers ever caught on camera.
