Stop Organizing Your Golf Bag Wrong!
The right golf bag setup makes it easier to find your clubs and can help prevent unnecessary wear and damage.
When it comes to golf bags, there are a plethora of options for divider systems. Everything from the basic top-and-bottom 2-way system found in most Sunday bags, to elaborate 14- or 15-way dividers for those who are going to ride in a cart, and from there everything in between.
And while it might seem obvious to most long-time golfers, I've completely lost count of how many times I've seen golf bags loaded incorrectly, creating major inconveniences for the user. But it's not just about convenience or keeping your bag looking organized. There's a functional reason to pay attention to how you use those dividers, too: protecting your clubs.
Carry Bags
If you are using a carry bag and walking (or even pushing a cart on occasion), the rule is simple: organize your clubs from longest to shortest, top to bottom. The one exception is your putter. Since you're going to use it on every hole, keeping it at the top makes it much easier to grab.
Not only does this make the most logical sense for getting your clubs in and out, but you have to remember that graphite shafts can be damaged over time by repeated contact in the bag. If you have your driver, woods, and hybrids below your irons and wedges, those clubs will knock into those graphite shafts hundreds of times per round.

Push Cart Bags
When it comes to using a push cart, the same rules from walking apply because the bag is being carried/pushed on an angle. Organize your clubs from longest to shortest from the top of the bag to the bottom.

This is where things change. If you're a frequent walker who only rides occasionally, you can basically ignore this section. There's no reason to reconfigure your entire bag for the occasional cart round.
But if a golf cart is your modus operandi, throw the previous advice out the window. With a cart bag, the "top" is actually the back of the bag, away from the pockets. From there, organize your clubs from back to front.
This is usually pretty easy to set up because most, if not all, proper cart bags are built with some slope from back to front to help clubs sit in a standard direction and prevent iron heads from hitting the more delicate driver and fairway wood shafts.
