This past weekend in the desert, Scottie Scheffler once again proved why he is the best player in the world, and if it wasn't for a wayward iron shot on the 71st hole of the event, there is a good chance he would have broken a scoring record along the way. He did get to 20 wins, though.
As far as his golf clubs are concerned, this isn't Formula1, meaning players don't have to switch to the newest gear if they don't want to, and in general, Scottie has been pretty steady over the last few years with his current setup. That setup includes a TaylorMade Qi10 driver, P7TW irons, Vokey SM8 wedges, Spider L-Neck putter, and a Titleist Pro V1 golf ball.

But one thing that has been upgraded at the top end of his bag was his 7-wood, and if you're a golfer who hasn't tried one yet, you no longer have any excuse not to. Scottie just happens to use a TaylorMade Qi4D with a Fujikura Ventus Black 9X.
Although this might sound overly simple, using a 7-wood allows for a huge amount of shot versatility that just isn't possible with any other type of club, especially out of the rough, where these variables are exaggerated.
Long irons with shorter shafts and thinner soles don't push through rough as well and get slowed down quickly, resulting in shots that come out low with less spin. As far as hybrids are concerned, they cut through the rough better, but still generate lower spinning shots because of their face height and center of gravity location. This is helpful when advancing the ball, but doesn't create height.
7-woods, on the other hand can do all of that and more.
This is made possible because 7-woods (and other higher lofted woods) have a longer shaft and heads with a deeper center of gravity. They also have more rounded leading edges, which are a huge advantage when hitting shots out of the rough.

This conbination makes it easier to hit shots longer and higher, while still maintaining the ability to stop the ball on approach. Heck if you think 7-woods are a stretch, even players like Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott have used 9-woods on a regular basis to help with longer approach shots.
So as the season starts to get underway and you're looking at your set that might still have a 3, or 4-iron in the bag. It might be time to reconsider your setup, because it sure seems to be working for Scottie and I bet it could work for you too.
