Bench Tested: Callaway Quantum Mini Spinner Fairway Wood

When it comes to approach play, the numbers are simple - the farther you are from the green, the more likely your score is to be higher. The main reason is that longer approach shots are just plain harder, and those longer clubs require more precise contact to launch and spin in the right windows to maximize precision and stopping power.

This is where Callaway's new Mini Spinner line of fairway woods comes in to help, and adds to an expansive selection of options from Callaway designed to help golfers find the right ball flight and gapping for their long games.

What Is the Quantum Mini Spinner?

What makes the Mini Spinner unique is that it works counterintuitive to the way most fairway woods are designed - rather than being designed to launch higher and with less spin, the Mini Spinner line was developed to (as the name suggests) actually spin more with the help of a higher center of gravity.

We went with a steel crown and a composite sole. A lot of times on our fairways, you see the opposite. You see composite on the crown, steel on the sole to try and lower the center of gravity. Well, this is the opposite. We wanted a high center of gravity to generate more spin.

Other elements of the design include Callaway's Step Sole to improve ground interaction, an Ai-optiimized face, and lengths mades 3/4" shorter that standard Callaway fairway woods to generate better contact consistency.

The end result is a club that can help golfers, and has already seen massive success at the professional level in Japan, as explained here by Evan Gibbs;

It (the club request) came directly from a player in Japan who was struggling to find a club to fit (the top end) part of the bag. This is where typically a lot of the fitters focus. And there's increasingly a lot of options in this part of the bag with utility irons and hybrids and fairway woods. But she saw an opportunity to create something unique that had a very specific performance characteristics that offered some clear benefits over hybrids and fairway woods.

Specifically, for her, she wanted a club that she could hit into greens, replacing long irons, but something that was created a little bit more spin for more stopping power and a lot more consistency. This is sort of a scoring club, something that she had to hit consistently and be able to hold greens a lot more than a hybrid could.

As for our testing, we put the Quantum Mini Spinner up against the Quantum Titanium 5-wood, along with the Apex UW, to find out just how much extra stopping power the Mini Spinner can generate.
