"New" Old Putter Vaults JJ Spaun Into Lead At BMW

Even the best players in the world have off days with the flatstick, and like the rest of us, they might give a new putter a shot while the other one goes to time-out.

The only difference for a player like J.J. Spaun happens to be that the putter most recently in time-out was used to win the U.S. Open - and drain one of the most memorable putts in the championship's history.

But time-out eventually ends, and for J.J.'s LAB Golf DF3, that ended this week in St. Louis during the ProAm for the BMW Championship, where it officially made its comeback. Before this, he was using a Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5R with a custom flow next (we spotted him using it in Detroit during the Rocket Classic).

As for his first two rounds at the BMW, (stats current before end of round-2), J.J ranks 3rd in stroked gained putting with +3.960, to go alongside his +1.643 stokes gain on approach. It also helps that for the event so far he has drained 114' 7" worth of putts, placing his second in the field.

Goes to show that maybe sending a putter to timeout can really pay off, even for U.S. Open Champions.
